I just purchased a leopard gecko at a reptile convention. Now my experience is with ball pythons mainly and bearded dragons, I know only what I have read about leopard geckos. Any information and help as to how to make this lizard as at home as possible would be greatly appreciated.......

Tue, May 23, 2006 - 5:53 AMawww congrats. we love our little leopard gecko. he's so cute!! ours was a rescue, and wasnt taken care of properly, so his little feet are turned in and he's missing a few toes. he walks like an alligator, so we named him Sobek (egyptian crocodillian god) -

Re: New addition to our family
Sat, July 1, 2006 - 12:46 PMMake sure to get them yummy things besides crickets. My geckos love mealworms, small silkworms, and the occassional pinky mouse.
The other poster mentioned toe problems - this is really common with bad sheds (the skin builds up on the toes, cutting off circulation, and eventually the toes are lost). Even though leopard geckos like it dry, they need a little humidity to shed. So make sure the gecko has a humidity box. A small tupperware container with some damp moss is perfect.
I keep my geckos on repti-sand. I know some people advocate non-sand substrates, I've never had a problem with it. I like it because my geckos have one "toilet" corner and it's really easy to clean this area by using a small fish net to sift the sand.
Have fun with the little guy. They're great lizards, extremely personable and easy to care for. -

Tue, July 4, 2006 - 8:25 AMThey are great little herps, and make GREAT starter herps.
Its so funny, i had to help ours get his "mask" off one time, and help get the shed off his toes, and i guess he didnt like the way i was holding him, cause he turned around and BIT ME!!! lmao!!!! The only thing ive ever been bit by (and we have lots of different herps) and i get bit by the sweetest thing. At least it wasnt the Tokay ;)
