Carl is a large black throated african monitor...maybe you saw my post a while back trying to find him a new home....Well, he's happily here with me, living large on a sundeck on the beach in Santa Cruz. K, here's my question....I noticed the tip of his tail is "missing". Looks like a `very clean cut...no oozing, but not "black' anymore either. He could have caught it on one of the rocks I have put outside for him on the enclosed deck (he's shedding, too....hmmmm, that's probably not the correct term)...just don't know. Will it grow back (my son who left him here is disgusted with my negligence....bahh!) Eating good, lively, etc. Annnnd, should I give him a rub down with a soft brush? ANY information would be helpful....I've scoured the web but a bit of tail missing on a monitor just didn't jump out at me.....thanks, everyone! Bounty & Carl

Tue, June 12, 2007 - 3:16 PMI have a few reptiles here in my Zoo, but none are Monitors... so this will be very "general" info, at best... just so's ya know. :o) K? Okay... first off, his tail should regenerate in time. A shed should not cause him to lose tail or toes, but it can if he's not hydrated enough and some old shed remains on too long... the old skin can act like a tourniquet and cause them to come off... I would imagine, very painfully. Yikes! So next, I would suggest you get a very big tub or kiddy pool, depending on his size, and allow the guy to soak in it whenever he wants... in other words, put it in his enclosure. He just needs a big enough "pool" to get in and turn around some.. not too deep.. and maybe a flat'ish stone or two in there for him to grip when he needs to get out. This will aid in being hydrated enough to shed easily.
Hope this helps!

P.s. Using a soft brush or any brush on your guy may or may not go over well... could cause unnecessary stress to him, if he's not used to getting a bath and all that. I have a little lizard dude here that LOVES the bath, the brush (toothbrush) and a pedicure! :o) -

Tue, June 12, 2007 - 3:19 PMI forgot to say.. You can put a little Poly or Neo sporin on his booboo for aiding the healing process. I just had a gecko drop her tail and I dabbed a little Neosporin on it for a few days. Her nubby is in perfect health... thank goodness cuz hers won't grow back! Heh! -
