My 12 year old female iguana has been very finiicky lately when it comes to her food. No matter what i feed her she eats a few bites and then goes back to basking. She is drinking and pooping normally although since there is not a lot of food going in there is not a lot of food coming out.
I have tried every favorite food I can think if for her and nothing works. I even went so far as to get her Jump Start. Not even that works.
She is active and happy but I feel like she should definitely be eating more.
I recently brought her to my apartment from my others house. She has been with me now for almost 2 months and is having al ot more social interaction than she has had in the past year. My mother said she went through a few periods like this while in her care but I am still a worried mommy. She use to eat like a pig.
Any info would be very helpful.
Thanks
G

Re: Cali won't eat!!
Mon, December 12, 2005 - 5:24 PMomg.. this could be MY iguana!!!
every year at this time of year she does the same thing.. she just doesnt eat. I think its the change in season that does it and also the change for daylight savings... I change her light at that time. Of course since it only happens once a year I forget about it and get concerned evertime until I talk to my mother who took care of her for 3 months before I could move her out here with me. She reminds me that it happened while she had her and reminded me that I get concerned every year.
I recently caught her wolfing down some greens and when I busted her she looked at me all wide eyed like "uh oh... busted!"
I wouldn't worry ... she'll probably snap out of it soon.. in the meantime you could put some vitamin supps in her water... at least that way she wont lose valuable nutrients. -

Wed, December 14, 2005 - 3:14 PMThanks Rachel. It's good to know that there are other ladies out there with the same prob. They sure are moody huh :) -

Re: Cali won't eat!!
Thu, December 15, 2005 - 8:23 AMshe really can be moody... you should see the way she looks at me when she finally realizes I've got my face pressed up against the tank .. kinda like "who are you again? and why are you in my house?"
I'm sure she'll be just fine... I would start now documenting this episode so that next year you wont freak out again. -

Re: Cali won't eat!!
Sat, January 7, 2006 - 5:44 PMglad to hear your Cali is doing better!
My Daria however does not seem to be doing well. She is dying I think. SHe is very lethargic and has almost no muscle tone and has lost alot of weight. She does move around a bit but not so much anymore. I thought of taking her to a vet but if she is dying I don't want her to be out of the comfort of her own home and I don't want her last days to be full of poking and prodding.
If she is going please pray her passing is painless. -

Re: Cali won't eat!!
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 5:35 PMI am so sorry to hear that Rachel. Have you tried any electrolyte baths or supplements for her? -

Re: Cali won't eat!!
Wed, January 11, 2006 - 2:21 PMI havent but I did talk to the vet and he is hopeful.. he thinks her temp might have been too low for too long and he gave me some suggestions to try before brigning her in ....
just for those who dont know.. this little recipe is good to force feed if there are problems....
1 can of ensure
1 ripe banana
1 child's mutli-vitamin
blend and force feed... you can use a rubber spatula to get the mouth open and use an eye dropper to squirt -

Re: Cali won't eat!!
Thu, January 12, 2006 - 1:37 PMHope your little one's are better. that can be nerve wracking to be worried about a pet.
but just my two cents.
on the not eating: its winter. even though they are warm... length of daylight will do that to a reptile. they hibernate. couldn't it just be seasonal? (good habbit to get into i found was to keep a notebook by the tanks/ with the food and monitor daily/weekly food/health issues... then you can kinda see a pattern with a particular animal.
on the lethargic sick one:
definately take it to a vet ! however- look at the amount of light/ temp etc. 1/2 the problems with captive herps is usually adjusted with diet and light/temp.
hope they get better!
peace, t. -

Re: Cali won't eat!!
Thu, January 12, 2006 - 4:09 PMthat was my advice too about the initial not eating (Cali)...
mine seems to be showing slow improvements! I force fed her today and she took it and even fought me a little when SHE decided she was done... such attitude! 15 minutes later she still had her head up! much improvement! So I'll give her one more day of improvement and then take her in to get the once over.
Thanks Trish! -
