Hello,
I just joined. I currently have a female Russian/Afgan tortoise. Anyone else here own one?
In the past, I have kept a corn snake, a california king snake, a ball/royal python (I miss him the most... I had to give up my snakes when I moved 7 years ago), and an eastern box turtle (when I was a kid).
PS- It gets me upset when I go into a pet store and they have different herps in the same cages who have different requirements for food or humidity, or who obviously aren't being treated properly. The people they sell these animals too are then given the wrong info on how to care for them. It is frustrating.
Thanks,
Badger

Re: Intro/Russian Tortoise
Tue, December 13, 2005 - 11:09 AMHi Badger,
I used to have one when I lived in Southern California. It
roamed loose in the back yard with three box turtles. They
all fended for themselves and did very well for years. The
Russian tortise ate plants that I considered weeds and the
box turtles kept the snails & slugs at bay. -

Re: Intro/Russian Tortoise
Tue, December 13, 2005 - 8:12 PMI bet the climate of South Cali was perfect for him! (Not sure about the Box Turtles, but it probably depends on the species.) Yeah, my box turtle loved slugs and earthworms. My tortoise lives in a good-sized enclosure indoors. I feed her different lettuces, also dandelion greens and sometimes collared and mustards. She also nibbles on the hay I put in there for her to sleep under. Occasionally I'll give her a hibiscus flower from the garden!
